John McEnroe: “Jannik Sinner can win the Australian Open”

on

John McEnroe believes Jannik Sinner is ready to win a Slam. Sinner also managed to convince McEnroe thanks to the intense and positive final part of the season he experienced in 2023.

The Italian won the ATP 500 tournaments in Beijing and Vienna, beating Carlos Alcaraz once and Daniil Medvedev twice, both in the final. At the Nitto ATP Finals he then reached the final and lost only to Novak Djokovic. However, Sinner had defeated the Serbian in the second Round Robin match.

Sinner closed the circle by bringing Italy back to winning the Davis Cup after 47 years and in the semi-final he avoided elimination against Serbia by canceling three consecutive match points from Djokovic.

McEnroe belives Sinner can win the Australian Open 2024

Interviewed by the Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, McEnroe praised Sinner, defining the ATP No.4 tennis player ready to win a Major title, perhaps starting with the Australian Open.

“He’s ready to win a Slam. In Australia? Why not? We’ve been waiting for the big leap for a while and finally in the last few months we’ve seen it. Sinner has broken the chains, now he knows he belongs to the circle of the best, I’d be surprised if he didn’t win a Major this year. He is humble but has leadership qualities, he has made the leap in quality. He and Carlos Alcaraz will be the next big rivalry, but don’t forget about Holger Rune,” McEnore said.

The American tennis legend has won 7 Slams in singles, triumphing three times at Wimbledon and four at the US Open, and knows how to recognize the talent of a tennis player. The former world number one is therefore able to judge whether or not a player is capable of fighting to establish himself at the highest levels in the most important tournaments on the Tour.

Sinner is among the very first favorites together with Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev to win the title. The draw has given the Italian tennis player a good path and the natural landing place for the young ATP No.4 would seem to be the semi-final against Novak Djokovic.

In the first round Sinner has a challenging opponent, Botic Van De Zandschulp. A possible second round for Sinner seems easier, as he will be opposed to the winner of the match between the Argentinian Cachin and a player from the qualifiers.

The third round seed close to Sinner is the Argentine Baez. Galan, Kubler and Wolf are also in the area.
Jannik Sinner’s round of 16 opponent is expected to come out between No. 17 seed Frances Tiafoe who takes on Borna Coric in the first round and the tournament’s No. 15 seed Karen Khachanov.

For the quarter-final match, the number one suspect as Sinner’s opponent seems to be the world number 5 Andrey Rublev, but be careful, because in the area there are some insidious tennis players on fast surfaces, such as the number 10 seed Alex De Minaur or number 29 seed Sebastian Korda.

As mentioned, Sinner’s semifinal opponent could be Novak Djokovic or Stefanos Tsitsipas. Placed on the opposite side of the scoreboard and therefore possible opponents for Sinner only in the final, Rune, Medvedev, Zverev and Alcaraz.
