Kawakami: The 49ers’ Trey Lance era comes to an awkward and necessary end (paywall)
“But for now, this team is remarkably talented. Purdy seems like a winner. If Lance isn’t clearly better than Darnold (and he probably was worse this summer), the 49ers don’t have time to try to develop Lance anymore. Darnold is more reliable. Darnold was brought in because the 49ers figured he’d be more reliable than Lance, and nothing that happened this summer switched up anything. And now Lance is gone, after four 49ers starts in two seasons. Which seems amazingly fast and also feels like it took forever.”

“I’ve never been in this situation before where we have two really good kickers in our camp and a few days before the final 53, both kickers aren’t available at this time,” Shanahan said. “These next couple days are important just for us to see how rehab is going and try to guess where it’s going to be two weeks from now when we kick off.”
