The Giants’ receiver wants a contract extension

New York Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton is skipping voluntary workouts, per a report from ESPN.

Slayton, who signed a two-year, $12.2 million contract prior to the 2023 season, reportedly wants a contract extension beyond the 2024 season. He’s due to make $350,000 if he hits his attendance threshold for offseason workouts. He could, however, consider a contract extension to be worth the trade-off.

The Giants originally drafted Slayton in the fifth round (171st overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft. He was a relatively unknown receiver out of Auburn, but his explosive athleticism made an impact on the Giants’ offense. Slayton has since lead the Giants in receiving in four of the five years since he was drafted, including this past season.

Slayton is coming off of a strong season in a year of poor offense for the Giants as a whole. He had the most yards and most catches of his career, with the second-most touchdowns, yards per catch, second highest catch percentage (63.3), and second lowest drop rate (3.8 percent) of his career.

It’s understandable that he’d want the team to make a long-term investment in him coming off of one of his best seasons. It’s also understandable that he’d some measure of security with the possibility that the Giants could spend their third high draft pick on a receiver for the third year in a row.

But while it’s important to remember that these workouts are voluntary, it’s also not a great look for one of the Giants’ most veteran players to absent.

We’ll keep an eye on the situation to see if it lingers further into the offseason program or even into camp and preseason.
