Is a Tua Tagovailoa contract extension imminent?

ESPN’s Jeremey Fowler stole headlines Sunday afternoon when he announced that the Miami Dolphins and star quarterback Tua Tagovailoa have officially started dialogue towards a long-term contract. This report comes days after Miami signed free agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. to a one-year deal worth up to $8.5 million.

“I’m told the negotiations have begun in earnest. The Dolphins have at least got the ball rolling. Typically, a team makes a contract offer the player counters, and they go from there and see if they can find a sweet spot. The next three months will be crucial.”

Fowler continued: “My sense is this has not graduated to something that is imminent, but the Dolphins are pretty committed to this. Their actions this offseason say they are going to pay him.”

Tagovailoa, 26, led the league in passing a season ago, throwing for 4,624 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. He was the first Dolphins quarterback to lead the league in passing, since, you guessed it, Dan Marino. Now, Miami’s young quarterback looks to get paid like one of the league’s top quarterbacks. This, as you can expect, has caused a bit of an uproar on social media, with fans from all 32 teams giving their insight on Tua’s inevitable extension.

That said, a report earlier this offseason suggested Tua would not seek a contract that would reset the market or even top some of his peers. How much less has yet to be determined, but for a team with nearly two decades worth of pain and suffering at the most important position in the sport, locking up Tua long-term is a necessity.

Since being drafted in 2020, Tagovailoa has experienced a rollercoaster of events, from the dreadful Brian Flores era to the 2022 season plagued by injury to what we see today: one of the better quarterbacks in all of football. Unfortunately, to be the best, you have to be the best, and until Tua and the Dolphins win the AFC East and/or a playoff game, nothing will matter.

How do you feel about the Miami Dolphins and Tua Tagovailoa working on a long-term contract extension? Do the Dolphins have any choice but to pay a promising young quarterback like Tua?
