Kristine Sommer has confirmed her retirement from rugby at the age of 32. She steps away after representing the USA in both 7s and XVs, most recently at the 2022 World Cup in New Zealand.
Originally from Palmdale, California, Sommer gained national recognition with Seattle Rugby before making the move overseas with Harlequins in 2018. This past season she suited up for Gloucester-Hartpury in the Premier 15s.
At international level Sommer first appeared at the Dubai Sevens in 2016, making her full test debut a year later against Canada. Equally adept at lock or loose forward, she finishes with 25 caps and notably captained the Eagles in their opening match of the 2022 Pacific Four.
A statement included in a media release reads, in part:
“Though my impact will no longer be on the pitch, I ask everyone to join me in supporting all the players looking to wear the same USA jersey I have. We have an opportunity to create something amazing – a professionalized USA Women’s Rugby.
“With the USA hosting the Rugby World Cups in 2031 and 2033, there is no time like now to accelerate our support and engagement and show the world our commitment to the sport and the women who play it.
“I intend to continue my position as a representative of the USA Rugby Players Association for as long as I can, and I’ll continue to serve the national team and player pathways through the XV Foundation.”
