Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has performed at a high level throughout the 2023 season, and there’s reportedly a likelihood that the team will reward him in a big way.
B/R’s Jordan Schultz reported on Thursday’s episode of Speak on FS1 that Prescott and the Cowboys are “highly motivated” to complete a contract extension that would put him among the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL.
Schultz noted that Prescott is likely to get “between $55 and $60 million,” which would reset the quarterback market. Cincinnati Bengals star Joe Burrow is currently the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history at $55 million per year, and it sounds like Prescott will have the opportunity to surpass that.

The likely answer is both, but McCarthy has really taken command of this offense.
Players and coaches alike know that come next month, they’ll be judged not by how quickly they radio in a play call or how well their off-platform throws succeed. Instead, a large swath of fans will determine the season’s success by whether the Cowboys finally break their now 28-year NFC championship game drought — and, in fans’ ideal world, advance further.
Prescott is well aware of that ultimate goal. This weekend’s matchup of NFC playoff teams will be a solid test of how ready the Cowboys are for January; a solid test of whether the speedy play calls, doctorate-level line-of-scrimmage diagnosis and post-49ers execution variance can push Dallas over the hump.
Performances like the go-ahead touchdown drive late in Miami give Dallas’ offense confidence. But Prescott’s message to his teammates about that score rings true for the weeks to come.
“From the time we came to the sideline, I told them then. ‘Be ready to go do it again,’” Prescott said. “‘We’re not celebrating. Be ready to go put another drive together.’”

Home Dallas cooks, and it is in desperate need of a pick-me-up game against a good team before finishing the season.
The circumstances are quite a bit better for Detroit coach Dan Campbell since the previous time the Lions visited his home state.
The Texas native has led the Lions to their first division title in 30 years, and the NFC North champs aren’t out of the running for the top seed in the NFC heading into Saturday night’s visit to the Dallas Cowboys.
A season ago, the Lions lost to Dallas, where Campbell spent three of his 10 seasons an NFL tight end, to drop to 1-5 — and 4-18-1 since he took over as coach.
Detroit is 19-7 since then, and headed to the playoffs for just the fourth time in 24 seasons. The Lions (11-4) share the best record in the NFC with San Francisco and Philadelphia.

Quite the parallel of seasons.
It was late December. The Cowboys were on their final push for the playoffs and on track to post yet another 12-win season. Injuries and depth issues put Dallas in a precarious position at OT. One starting tackle was rushed back from injury and clearly not playing up to his previous standard, while the other tackle position was manned by a player who probably should have been playing guard.
Coming off a game in which Terence Steele and Chuma Edoga accounted for nine pressures, five hurries, three hits and a sack, it’s understandable if it seems the situation above is describing the current state of affairs in Dallas. But it’s actually the 2022 season being described, illustrating the same predictable issues continue to plague the Cowboys year after year.
It was Spanish philosopher George Santayana who famously said, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” Because lessons that aren’t remembered, aren’t really lessons at all. The Cowboys appeared to learn a lesson the hard way in 2022. Issues on the offensive line caused their running game and pass protection to crater late in the season, ultimately dooming them in the playoffs.

Players don’t always work out, but this feels like a miss.
The Cowboys on Wednesday released linebacker Rashaan Evans, a former first-round draft pick of the Titans, one day after Evans was arrested in Frisco, Texas, on a misdemeanor charge of marijuana possession.
Coach Mike McCarthy and team officials have suggested the incident and transaction are unrelated, implying that Evans’ release had more to do with the activation of offensive tackle Matt Waletzko from injured reserve.
The move is notable, however, because Evans was originally signed in October — first to Dallas’ practice squad — to provide emergency depth after starter Leighton Vander Esch’s season-ending neck injury. Promoted to the active roster in November, Evans appeared in nine games through Week 16, starting one of them, while logging nine tackles.
