Copa de la Reina, 2023 edition in Sotogrande

Six blue women take part in the Spanish International Ladies Amateur Championship “Copa de S.M. La Reina” which will take place from 28 February to 5 March on the course of the Real Club de Golf de Sotogrande, in Sotogrande in Spain. They are Natalia Aparicio, Paris Appendino, Ginevra Coppa, Francesca Fiorellini, Matilde Partele and Francesca Carola Pompa, accompanied by Roberto Zappa, head coach of the women’s national amateur team, and coach Luigi Zappa.

The 105th edition of the tournament, born in 1911 and in which 99 competitors take part, 30 of which are Spanish, takes place in two phases: qualification on 36 medal holes and match play between the top 64 classified. Four Italian successes by Isa Goldschmid (1952), Rosanna Bergamo (1956), Isabella Calogero (1989) and Caterina Quintarelli (1991). Vanda Rosa (1954), Marina Buscaini (1985), Silvia Cavalleri (1992) and Alessia Nobilio (2017, 2019) took second place.

One of the strongest Spanish amateurs of the moment is aiming for the double, Cayetana Fernandez Garcia-Poggio, winner last year and current number 6 in the world rankings, but more specifically the home players, who also won in 2021 with Carla Bernat Escuder , are aiming for the third title in a row that has been missing since four in a row Adriana Zwanck (2003), Beatriz Recari (2004) and Carlota Ciganda (2005, 2006).

Among the Iberians to follow also Anna Cañadó, Rocio Tejedo, who scored in the Portuguese International Ladies Amateur Championship in January by beating Cayetana Fernandez Garcia-Poggio in the playoffs, and again Paula Martin and Andrea Revuelta. In the field and able to interfere in the Iberian projects, the German Helen Briem, number 14 in the world, the Swedish Meja Ortengren (n. 17), the Belgian Savannah De Bock, as well as of course Francesca Fiorellini, who has already made apply often.

It is the most glamorous residential complex on the entire Spanish coast, called Sotogrande, classified as a Center of National Tourist Interest in Spain. It belongs to the municipal territory of San Roque and borders with Manilva and the province of Malaga, La Linea de la Concepción and with Castellar de la Frontera. One of the features that makes it unique is the amazing panorama: in fact, it offers a privileged view of the African coast and of the entire Strait of Gibraltar, with the Towers of Hercules in the foreground.
