Waiting to find out all the players who will participate in the Laver Cup in 2023, Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe have announced their presence on the bench of Team Europe and Team World respectively.
In short, the 2023 edition will be nostralgic. It will be the first without Roger Federer on the court, a cataclysm for tennis. Compounding this new generation that is struggling to advance (Carlos Alcaraz is an exception), there are Borg and McEnore, two legends. Two characters who have transcended tennis, now in everyone’s mind in the collective imagination.
One of the best rivalries of all time will also experience its sixth chapter at the Laver Cup. The team led by the Swedish legend achieved their first success against Europe last season.
McEnroe said: “We have always been very close to winning in recent years, but we have never made it across the finish line. However, we have continued to fight and have shown great team spirit. It was fantastic to win the Laver Cup last year in London. Bjorn is now a great friend of mine, but you couldn’t let him beat me five consecutive times.”
Borg instead explained: “It was a privilege to be involved in this project from the first moment. I was lucky to have incredible champions in Team Europe Champions at my disposal, we have been so successful. I’m sure we will have a great battle in Vancouver as well.”
Roger Federer also paid tribute to the precious presence of the two legends. He told: “Bjorn and John are fantastic for the Laver Cup. They are great team leaders, mentors and ambassadors for the event. They fight hard but with tremendous respect for the sport we all love. Laver Cup couldn’t have chosen better. I’m really looking forward to being in Vancouver in September to see their teams compete once again.”
The Laver Cup will be without Roger Federer
The fifth edition of the Laver Cup will always remain engraved in the hearts and minds of all sports enthusiasts. In fact, Roger Federer said goodbye to the tennis world by playing one last doubles match with his historic rival Rafael Nadal.
Both, at the end of the meeting, could not hold back the tears and gave life to one of the most emotional moments in the history of sport holding hands for several minutes. The next edition of the new team tournament created by Federer will take place at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver from 22 to 24 September.
