Slay was quick to poke fun at the incoming rookie about an interview he did leading up to the draft, but he also sent out a welcome.

Darius Slay has been one of the most (publicly) welcoming members of the Eagles secondary. He embraced his role in mentoring first round pick Quinyon Mitchell, and is now getting the awkward part out of the way with the team picking Cooper DeJean on Friday night.

DeJean did an interview with Whistle during his pre-draft process, and was asked to choose “start, bench, cut” between Sauce Gardner, Jalen Ramsey, and Darius Slay. He answered the question in the same order, saying he’d start Gardner, bench Ramsey, and “I guess I had to cut Slay.”

Who would have guessed that DeJean would be Slay’s future teammate, and that the NFL veteran would be aware of that interview? Slay was sure to tease the incoming rookie a little bit, in addition to welcoming him to the team.

DeJean also said in the interview that he most looks forward to locking up Tyreek Hill in the NFL, so he’ll probably learn quickly just how much he doesn’t actually want Slay cut from his team.
