The Los Angeles Chargers went against consensus, picking Maryland cornerback and punt returner Tarheeb Still with the 137th pick

With the 137th pick in the NFL draft, the Los Angeles Chargers selected Maryland cornerback and punt returner Tarheeb Still.

Still was ranked 265th on the Consensus Big Board of over 100 analysts put together by Wide Left. Nevertheless, there are reasons to value the pick.

Starting immediately upon arriving in at Maryland, Still earned eight pass deflections in just four games in a COVID-shortened 2020 as a freshman, earning honors as a Freshman All-American. He followed that up with an 11-pass deflection season in 2021.

His final two years were a little less impressive, but he did begin recording interceptions, finishing his career as a true senior with five interceptions and seven pass deflections. Unlike many college corners, Still has experience as a press-man coverage. He also has experience on both the outside and on the inside.

There are size and arm length concerns; At 5’11” 188 pounds with 29 5/8” arms, Still doesn’t have the prototypical measurements for a starting NFL outside corner and his average 40-yard dash time — 4.52 seconds — doesn’t help. He also had a penalty-heavy career at Maryland with 16 over his final three seasons.

Harbaugh and Hortiz clearly value his experience and versatility, so it’s worth seeing what he can bring to the table.
