Bernard Gallacher: “Tiger Woods in Ryder Cup”

on

When it comes to Bernard Gallacher, it’s impossible not to mention the Ryder Cup.

The Scottish player has been a part of the European team a remarkable 10 times throughout his long career, spanning the transition from Team Great Britain & Ireland to Team Europe.

He boasts seven appearances as a player, with a record of six losses and one draw for the team.

In the other three editions, he served as the Captain, experiencing two losses and one victory (at Oak Hill Country Club in 1993).

It’s fair to say that when Gallacher talks about this topic, he does so with authority.

And the 2025 Ryder Cup was the subject of an interview with Gallacher, featured in Bunkered magazine.

Luke Donald will be the first, after several years, to hold the position in two successive editions, succeeding Gallacher on this special list.

The Team USA has not yet named its Captain, but Gallacher is clear on this:

“They’re waiting for the right moment to announce Tiger.”

“Tiger is a special case. They (the PGA of America) want him to be the Captain at Bethpage.”

“They need to bounce back and redeem themselves after the performance in Rome.”

“He would be a great Captain because players of his generation would want to play their best for him.”

But Woods strongly desires to be the Captain of Team USA at Adare Manor in 2027, due to his friendship with JP McManus, the resort owner, whose opening he attended himself.

“This would mean he should be the Captain in two consecutive editions, and this could be appealing to the PGA of America.”

Turning to Team Europe, Gallacher is adamant about the need to change the qualification criteria to allow access to LIV Golf players.

“We need to field the strongest team.”

“Last time (in Rome), the issue concerned Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood, but they are both over forty.”

“It’s not the case with Jon Rahm, who is 29 and has won two Majors.”

“Rory has said he wouldn’t want to face the Americans without him, and that says a lot.”

“Tyrrell Hatton is ready to win a Major, so he should also have his place on the team.”
