AEW has ‘big surprises’ planned for Dynasty, and Jack Perry’s return might be one of them

The Young Bucks are scheduled to face FTR tonight in a ladder match. This is the final match of the AEW world tag team championship tournament, and the winning team will become the first 3-time champs in company history.

In a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, Nicholas and Matthew Jackson teased that big surprises are on the way at Dynasty:

“Nobody does pay-per-view like AEW. Expect big surprises.”

One of those big surprises might be the return of Jack Perry. A couple of weeks ago, Tony Khan decided to air the security camera footage of Perry’s backstage scuffle with CM Punk at All In: London. Khan said the angle added a lot of heat to this ladder match between the Bucks and FTR, but that wasn’t true.

Matthew and Nicholas used the footage as a typical heel excuse for why they lost to FTR at All In, which is fine, but people weren’t clamoring to see the Bucks get their asses kicked that much more just because they came up with a shitty excuse for a loss from nearly eight months ago. The footage basically had nothing to do with FTR and the Bucks. However, if The Scapegoat is making his surprise return tonight to help the EVPs win this ladder match, then the footage’s tie-in to this match makes more sense.

Whether Perry shows up or not, the Young Bucks and FTR are arguably the two best tag teams in the world, and it will be another big surprise if this is anything less than a spectacular match.

The rest of the card

These 11 matches are also currently advertised for tonight at Dynasty:

Samoa Joe (c) vs. Swerve Strickland for the AEW world championship

Swerve Strickland is determined to make history as the first Black world champion in AEW history. He had a chance to accomplish that goal last month at Revolution, but Hangman Page stopped it from happening. Hangman appears to be out of the picture now, and this time it’s just a one-on-one match between Swerve and Samoa Joe. Joe better hope that Hangman is lurking somewhere in the building tonight, because there’s not much else that can stop the challenger from fulfilling his destiny and cementing AEW as Swerve’s house.

Will Ospreay vs. Bryan Danielson

This is the long-awaited dream match between two stars who rank among the very best wrestlers alive today. Ospreay joined AEW in late February and has lived up to the hype, delivering incredible matches in the ring while also capturing everyone’s attention with his charismatic promos. Ospreay knows how good he is and can’t wait to prove that he is better now than Danielson ever was. Meanwhile, Bryan doesn’t think Ospreay has what it takes to walk in his shoes.

Both men have battled the Don Callis family along the way to get to Dynasty. Ospreay is actually part of the family, but Don is a moron who booked his guys to fight each other. Not surprisingly, there was some tension between Powerhouse Hobbs and Ospreay after their match ended. Don also sent his guys to injure Bryan, in order to ensure that Will wins at Dynasty. Ospreay pushed back on that strategy, because he is cocky enough to think he can beat Bryan all by himself. Ospreay has butted heads with his own stable as a result, and it’s just a matter of time until there is a breakup.

Toni Storm (c) vs. Thunder Rosa for the AEW women’s world championship

Thunder Rosa was forced to relinquish the AEW women’s world championship in late 2022 due to injury. She was never beaten for the title. She made her return to the ring towards the end of 2023 and has yet to lose a match. However, she’s also never had an opponent quite like “Timeless” Toni Storm, who recently addressed Rosa by saying “You bask in the glow of the sun that shines right out of my ass!”

Rosa rubbed Deonna Purrazzo the wrong way while earning this title shot, so the challenger won’t have anyone in her corner to help fend off Mariah May or Luther. That could very well be the deciding factor in this title match.

Kazuchika Okada (c) vs. PAC for the AEW continental championship

The Rainmaker Kazuchika Okada signed with AEW after his NJPW contract ended, and he officially joined the roster last month. He immediately turned heel on Eddie Kingston and joined the Young Bucks as the newest member of The Elite. The Bastard PAC then returned to AEW a few days later and went right after Okada. PAC is no fan of the Bucks, so Okada’s association with them put him right in The Bastard’s crosshairs.

In his first singles match as part of the AEW roster, Okada defeated Eddie Kingston to win the AEW continental championship. That title is on the line in this match, which is an added bonus for PAC since he’d like to tear The Rainmaker apart whether he’s holding gold or not.

Roderick Strong (c) vs. Kyle O’Reilly for the AEW international championship

Kyle O’Reilly returned to AEW last month after nearly two years on the injured list. The Undisputed Kingdom welcomed their old chum in with open arms, but he declined their offer and decided to do things on his own for now. That didn’t sit well with Roderick Strong, especially when he saw Kyle wishing good luck to Rocky Romero in his quest to win Strong’s belt. Kyle also expressed interest in winning the belt himself, and that was the point of no return. Wardlow ambushed Kyle from behind and Strong continued the beating from there. As a result, O’Reilly was immediately booked in this title match against Strong at Dynasty. If Kyle doesn’t have an answer for Wardlow at ringside, this match probably won’t end well for him.

Julia Hart (c) vs. Willow Nightingale for the TBS championship

Whoever wins this match gets to defend (and probably lose) the TBS championship to Mercedes Mone at next month’s Double or Nothing pay-per-view event. Mercedes and Willow have both been victims of mysterious attacks over the last couple of weeks, and they suspect Julia is the culprit. That means she’s probably not the culprit. Regardless, Willow is now fired up and super pissed off at Julia, and she plans to powerbomb the shit out of her in this match and take her belt.

HOOK (c) vs. Chris Jericho for the FTW championship

After a successful tag team outing as LionHOOK, Jericho tested himself in a singles match against HOOK and lost. After that, Chris offered to be HOOK’s mentor and take him under the learning tree. HOOK wisely turned that crap down, which resulted in Jericho insulting Taz (HOOK’s dad) and shoving him down on his bad knee. Now they’ll fight about it over the unrecognized FTW gold at Dynasty.

Adam Copeland, Eddie Kingston & Mark Briscoe vs. House of Black

What first looked like a tease of a TNT champion match between Adam Copeland and Malakai Black quickly turned into this trios match where the babyfaces were put together seemingly out of nowhere. As a result, this feels like one of those “get everyone on the show” type of matches. It should still be a hell of a match, given the quality work these six men typically deliver. Malakai recently threatened Adam with talk of reaching his darkest fears and making him wonder if he’s in hell, so maybe that will somehow play into the finish.

Daddy Ass & The Acclaimed (c) vs. Bullet Club Gold (c) for both the AEW trios titles and the ROH six-man titles (pre-show)

The Bang Bang Scissor Gang formed earlier this year as a super faction in order to stand up to the threat of The Undisputed Kingdom. It turns out that neither group was actually a super faction. The Bang Bang Scissor Gang immediately forgot that they were supposed to go after Adam Cole’s group, and instead broke up after a couple of months because they were never a good fit to begin with. Bullet Club Gold turned on Daddy Ass & The Acclaimed and then invaded Daddy’s house. Ass arrived home to run them off, and then he beat the shit out of Jay White for the better part of 15 minutes in a baffling segment on Dynamite. The winner takes home all the belts in this match, in what sounds like a title unification. That a match with stakes like this ends up on a PPV pre-show tells you just how bad this story has been.

Matt Sydal vs. Trent Beretta (pre-show)

Trent Beretta has yet to publicly explain why he turned heel on Orange Cassidy after they lost in the AEW world tag team championship tournament. Matt Sydal tried to save Orange from an attack at the hands of Shane Taylor Promotions, but Trent stopped Sydal in his tracks by tossing a steel chair at his head. Sydal is looking for payback at Dynasty, but he practically never wins in AEW, so it’s pretty clear how this one will end.

Orange Cassidy & Katsuyori Shibata vs. Lee Moriarty & Shane Taylor (pre-show)

Cassidy beat Taylor in a singles match on Dynamite, but the heels laid out Orange after the match and draped their banner over him. Shibata has squared off with Shane Taylor Promotions in multiple matches this month, so he’ll join forces with Cassidy to fight them again. Do the babyfaces have an answer for Anthony Ogogo, who will presumably be ringside helping the heels?

Summary

There are somewhere between four to six matches at Dynasty that have potential to be incredible bouts, and that’s without top AEW stars like MJF, Jon Moxley, Kenny Omega, Adam Cole, and Darby Allin on the card. It’s a stacked lineup that will try to back up AEW’s claim that this is “where the best wrestle.” If great wrestling matches are your thing, then Dynasty looks like a must-watch event for Ospreay vs. Danielson alone.
