Plus, a versatile weapon from Utah

The prospect updates continue as we get closer and closer to the NFL Draft. On Tuesday, the San Francisco 49ers are hosting a pair of players. One could help right away, while the other would be more of a speciality pick:

Kingsley Suamatia is an offensive tackle from BYU. He’s a three-year sophomore who started on the left side in 2023 but was their right tackle in 2022.

Mock drafts have Suamatia going as high as the mid-20s or falling to the 60s. If he’s there in the second round, the Niners have the ammunition to move up a few spots to take their right tackle of the future and potential heir apparent to Trent Williams.

Kingsley is in the 15th percentile height-wise for tackles. He’s 6’4 5/8, while McKivitz is 6’6. The Niners do seem to have a hard stance on their height requirements at tackle, but we’re talking about less than an inch and a half. Suamataia is in the 80th percentile for weight, hand size, and broad jump.

If the Niners are attracted to natural strength, then it’s easy to understand why they’d gravitate toward the BYU tackle. Suamatia’s redeeming qualities are power, finishing, run blocking, and range. Per Sports Info Solutions, the Cougars averaged 2.6 yards before contact rushing behind Suamatia, which was eighth-best among all offensive tackles.

I like him more than most and would take him before Arizona’s Jordan Morgan or Oklahoma’s Tyler Guyton. He’s a five-star recruit, which tells me he’s just scratching the surface at 21. Chris Foerster will have to help with Suamatia’s hand placement and footwork, but that’s why you pay Foerster.

Vaki is another 3-year sophomore who played on both sides of the ball at Utah. He was a safety and a running back. Vaki’s athleticism is apparent, but special teams might be his calling card in the NFL until he hones in on one position.
