Why Matt Fitzpatrick finally switched to the new Ping Blueprint S irons

on

It has taken some time, but Ping have finally convinced Matt Fitzpatrick to switch out his iron offering.

Fitzpatrick had been using a set of Ping S55 irons (5-PW) since the 2014 season.

Up until last season, Fitzpatrick has kept up a good record of winning and hasn’t felt the need to change anything when it comes to his irons.

“I feel I’ve had success with them, so why change when you’re in winning form? That’s the big thing for me,” Fitzpatrick told GolfWRX.com.

“I tested other irons a couple years ago in the summer, but these are just the best for me and they fit well. I don’t want to change and try to do anything too different. Just stay with the same.”

When the Ping S55 irons were first made available to the general public in 2013, they had the thin toplines and compact sizes that better players wanted, but they also included perimeter weighting and a cavity-back construction for more forgiveness.

Ping had a hard time coming up with an argument to replace them given that combination.

Fitzpatrick, however, began trying Ping Blueprint S irons after the 2023 Ryder Cup, won the 2023 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship with them in his bag, and hasn’t looked back since.

The 29-year-old now uses the new Ping Blueprint S irons as a standard part of his setup.

“What’s not to like, really?” Fitzpatrick said of the Blueprint S irons. “They just look really good, they perform really good. I just like the feel of them. The look’s the biggest thing, I think, for me. They look like my old ones (the Ping S55 irons), just probably a little bit more modern. Everything about them is really good, I really like them.”

Fitzpatrick changed his iron shafts as well. He moved from True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100 shafts to Project X LZ 6.5 shafts, which are around 5 grams lighter.

Fitzpatrick is already benefiting from the switch. On the PGA TOUR in 2024, he is rated 22nd in Greens-In-Regulation; in the 2022–2023 season, he placed merely 156th in the same category.

If you’re looking for a lesson from a steadfast professional in Fitzpatrick, while it’s wise to stay with what you know and what feels right for you, don’t forget to check out the newest gear once every two to three years. You never know when you could discover something that will improve your skills.
