Xavi Simons is gaining momentum. Great hope of Batavian football, the young attacking midfielder, passed by Barça and PSG, clearly seems to have reached a plateau in recent months. Impressive in the colors of PSV Eindhoven, the kid from Amsterdam – who will celebrate his 20th candle on April 21 – is simply having his best season since the start of his career. Author of 15 goals and 8 assists in 37 matches in all competitions, the Dutchman finds himself, logically, at the heart of the debate a few months before a summer transfer window which already promises to be boiling.
Xavi Simons is having fun away from Paris!
An interest all the more pronounced when we know the details of his contractual situation. Transferred freely last July after a contrasting experience in the French capital to say the least – Xavi Simons has never enjoyed significant playing time within the Paris squad (11 appearances in total with the professional group) – l he Dutch international (1 selection) could, despite everything, make his return to the Rouge et Bleu. The reason ? The upper echelons of PSG had taken care to include a priority buyout clause in Simons’ contract at the time of his transfer to PSV Eindhoven.
Therefore, if the Parisian club, having a buyout clause which amounts to 12M€, wishes to buy the midfielder, the Dutch leaders will be forced to let him go. When asked about this in an interview with BNR Radiothe director general of PSV, Marcel Brands, has also confirmed the existence of this clause valid until June 2024. “For a long time it looked like he would just be on loan. His contract was about to expire and we are still committed to securing him permanently. This clause was created with the idea: ‘I also did part of my training there and I don’t want to close this door permanently’”thus confided the Dutch leader, determined to extend his nugget to thwart a possible Parisian maneuver.
A possible return to PSG?
“We will engage with him to have this clause removed. We will soon talk to him about it. I think we proved that we could offer something. […] I had a first discussion with his agent and we will soon sit down quietly with him and his brother to discuss it”affirmed, in this sense, the person in charge of the current 4th in the Dutch championship before evoking other avenues envisaged by the person concerned: “I think he would also like to play in the Premier League soon”. One thing is certain, if PSV are going to do everything to extend their 19-year crack – the Dutch press announces, in this respect, that PSV would like to obtain an agreement with the player before the start of the summer – and that the international Oranje does not close any doors, the reigning French champion could (still) have a say.
Promised for a very bright future, should the former resident of the PSG training center then be a priority for Luis Campos during the next summer transfer window? To believe the speech of many Parisian supporters and in view of the performances currently offered by the protege of Ruud van Nistelrooy, it is difficult to doubt it. Stunned by another disappointing elimination in the Champions League (0-3 in the double confrontation against Bayern Munich in the round of 16), the leaders of the Ile-de-France region already seem to be looking to the future. With this in mind, six players have been targeted in order to surround Kylian Mbappé, still at the center of the project. For the rest ? Places are up for grabs and Xavi Simons, frustrated by his playing time during his visit to the French capital, could clearly have his card to play.
In the midfield of the Rouge et Bleu, Marco Verratti, recently extended, certainly remains unstoppable and enjoys the favors of his management despite a culpable error during the return match in Bavaria. At his side, Vitinha, recruited last summer, alternated the good and the less good in the midfield but, despite everything, retained the confidence of the staff. Sometimes aligned in a sentry role, often present in 8 but also tried by Christophe Galtier as number 10, the Portuguese should therefore offer himself a second season in the capital. It now remains to know the identity of those who will accompany them. While Carlos Soler, Renato Sanches or even Fabian Ruiz seem to be heading for a departure, Xavi Simons appears to be a real challenge for the next Parisian transfer window. It now remains to be seen what the Parisian management will decide, under pressure after the recent declarations of the Dutch board. Hurry up…
