Upper respiratory issues force Paula Badosa out of Abu Dhabi

on

Paula Badosa and Garbine Muguruza both withdrew from a WTA 500 event in Abu Dhabi.

Badosa, a former world No 2, withdrew due to upper respiratory illness.

On the other side, two-time Grand Slam champion Muguruza pulled out due to personal reasons.

Both Badosa and Muguruza were scheduled to play their Abu Dhabi first-round matches on Tuesday.

In 2021, Badosa and Muguruza played in Abu Dhabi.

Neither of the two impressed in 2021 as both exited the tournament in the round-of-16 stage.

Badosa, Muguruza pull out of late of Abu Dhabi

Badosa kicked off her 2023 season at the inaugural United Cup, where she represented Spain.

Unfortunately for Badosa, she sustained a thigh injury at the United Cup and was forced to skip the Australian Open.

Badosa was scheduled to return to action this week in Abu Dhabi.

On the other side, Muguruza came to Abu Dhabi hoping to find some rhythm and form.

After her first four tournaments played, Muguruza owns a 0-4 record in 2023.

Just before the start of Abu Dhabi, Muguruza spoke about her new “humble attitude.”

“I’ve had so many moments in my career where I’ve been so high, and other moments when I’ve not been so high. It’s a process of trying to get back up there. Now I’m focusing on training hard and being humble. You have to know that maybe you haven’t had the success recently as you had in other years, but that’s fine because things can change very quickly. With tennis, one week it can go wrong, then next week it can go well, then everything changes again. I think experience helps me to stay calm in the not-so-good moments when I haven’t been playing as well or results haven’t followed,” Muguruza said.

Also, Muguruza said she now needs to keep it calm and simple.

Hopefully, Badosa and Muguruza won’t be forced to miss any additional tournaments in the upcoming period.
