Dominic Thiem expresses frustration with his DC performance: Huge disappointment

Dominic Thiem admitted he was “hugely disappointed” after failing to secure a single win for Austria in their Davis Cup qualifiers tie against Croatia.

This past weekend, Austria took on Croatia in Rijeka.

On the opening day of the tie, Thiem suffered a 6-3 7-6 (2) loss to Borna Gojo.

The following day, Thiem was beaten by Borna Coric 7-6 (3) 6-2.

With Coric’s win over Thiem, Croatia sealed a 3-1 win over Austria.

“It’s a huge disappointment. Obviously my match today, but also the fact that I couldn’t help to give my team, my country a point. We lost 1-3, I lost two points out of that, so it’s not a good weekend for me, so the disappointment is big right now,” Thiem said after Austria’s loss, per the Davis Cup website

Thiem failed to send the tie into a deciding match

The Austrians found themselves 2-0 down to Croatia after the opening day of the tie.

Then in the doubles match, Alexander Erler and Lucas Miedler stunned Ivan Dodig and Nikola Mektic to cut Austria’s deficit to 2-1.

Thiem then had a chance to send the tie into a deciding match but failed to deliver against Coric.

“There was a small glimpse of hope after the doubles, especially how the first set played out, but credit to Borna. He kept his level the whole match and it’s a well deserved win for Croatia,” Austrian captain Jurgen Melzer said.

Also, Melzer admitted that they didn’t consider themselves the favorites against Croatia but they did hope that they could pull a surprise win.

“We were far away from being favourites, but you want to believe, and put yourself in the position where a miracle can happen, but it didn’t. That’s just the facts. We deal with them and go back to the drawing board for September and try to come back to that stage to make it better next year,” Melzer added.
