Tiger Woods won’t play The Players nex week

Tiger Woods will not be returning to the PGA Tour next week at The Players Championship. This was revealed after the list of 144 participants was announced, and his name has been absent since 2019.

Woods made his 2024 debut last month at the event he hosts, the Genesis Invitational at the Riviera Country Club on the outskirts of Los Angeles. It was his first official event since withdrawing from last year’s Masters and undergoing ankle surgery.

However, his comeback was cut short on the seventh hole of his second round, as he withdrew due to illness. It was later revealed that Woods was receiving intravenous treatment.

The fifteen-time Major champion has stated that he hopes to play one event on the circuit per month in the future. Woods, 48, may choose to rest now and prepare for the Masters, scheduled from April 11 to 14.

Woods competed in the one-day professional tournament at Seminole Golf Club in Juno Beach, Florida, earlier this week. He partnered with PGA of America CEO Seth Waugh in an event that typically attracts high-profile PGA Tour players. 

Tiger Woods has received numerous accolades and honors throughout his career. In August 2007, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver announced that Woods would be inducted into the California Hall of Fame, with the induction taking place in December 2007 at The California Museum for History, Women and the Arts in Sacramento. Additionally, in May 2019, following his win at the 2019 Masters Tournament, Woods was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Donald Trump.

Internationally, Woods has been recognized with prestigious awards such as the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year in 2000 and 2001, making him the inaugural recipient of the award. He also received the BBC Overseas Sports Personality of the Year in 2000, an honor given to non-British sportspersons who have made significant contributions to their sport. Domestically, Woods has been honored by U.S. publications, including being named the Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year four times and receiving the title of “Athlete of the Decade” by the Associated Press in 2009. He is also one of only two individuals to have been named Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year more than once.

Woods’ impact on golf has been significant, with his record-breaking wins and widespread popularity contributing to increased prize money in golf tournaments, expanded audiences for PGA events, and record TV ratings in golf history. He is widely regarded as one of the most famous athletes in modern history and has been immortalized with a wax sculpture at Madame Tussauds.
