Despite playing all of his snaps at left tackle, general manager Brian Gutekunst believes his first-round pick can play the non-center positions.

New Green Bay Packers first-round pick Jordan Morgan played 2,483 offensive snaps of football at the University of Arizona, according to Pro Football Focus. Every single one of those reps came at left tackle.

When asked if he had played any other positions but left tackle, Morgan told the Green Bay media on Thursday that he had only lined up at guard in individual drills for practice during college. Despite that, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst stated that Morgan was a “versatile offensive lineman” who could play four positions — presumably the non-center spots — at the professional level.

Meanwhile, Super Bowl-winning head coach Bill Belichick claimed that Morgan was a “left tackle all the way” while on Pat McAfee’s stream of the NFL draft during the event.

Who knows where Morgan’s future will take him, either tackle or guard. When pressed on that question by the media, Gutekunst simply stated that he wants his best five offensive linemen to be on the field. Mind you, this is all coming off the heels of the rumors that the team views current starting right tackle Zach Tom as a potential Hall-of-Fame center.

Welcome to another season of offensive line debates, as there now seem to be six bodies for five seats in this game of musical chairs. Coming into the draft the presumed starters (left to right) were Rasheed Walker, Elgton Jenkins, Josh Myers, Sean Rhyan and Zach Tom. Now, it’s likely that one of Myers or Rhyan will be sent to the bench as the line reshuffles again.

Gutekunst also said that Morgan’s athleticism was a selling point for him being selected by the team in the first round. The Packers must have evaluated Morgan’s athleticism off of film, as he didn’t run the agility drills at either the combine or his pro day — an increasingly common occurrence for offensive linemen who are expected to be picked in the top 40 choices of the draft. The general manager mentioned that Morgan’s bounce back from his 2022 ACL tear to have a First-Team All-Pac-12 season as a team captain in 2023 was also a positive on his scouting report.

As far as the remaining draft choices in the draft go, Gutekunst claimed that the Packers’ draft board “held up pretty well” going into Day 2 of the draft. He also said that Green Bay will “explore some opportunities” on moving up or down the board tomorrow. Trading up in the first round wasn’t likely for the Packers, Gutekunst admitted, once players they thought could take a drop on draft day didn’t. He said the team realized early “moving up probably wasn’t going to happen.”
