Super League, Johnson wins in Las Vegas

on

The LIV Golf Las Vegas, the second stop of the 2024 Arab Super League, was claimed by Dustin Johnson. The American, a former world number one, secured the individual title in the United States with a score of 198 (67 62 69, -12), narrowly edging out Talor Gooch (66 66 67) and Peter Uihlein (66 65 68), both on the podium with a score of 199 (-11). A Major champion and dominant force in the inaugural season of the separatist green league in 2022, Johnson’s triumph in Nevada earned him $4,000,000 from a total prize pool of $20,000,000, with an additional $375,000 for his second-place team, “4Ages GC,” finishing at “-26” in the team competition, which was won decisively at “-33” by the “Smash GC” led by Brooks Koepka.

“It’s a great success, achieved after three days of intense competition. I knew it would be tough, especially considering the challenging weather conditions, but I pulled through,” expressed the satisfaction of 39-year-old Johnson, hailing from Columbia, who in his career boasts victories at the US Open 2016 and the Masters 2020 among many other accomplishments.

However, it was a meager haul for Jon Rahm this time around. The Spanish player, ranked number 3 in the world and a star of the 2024 LIV Golf, finished in 8th place with a score of 202 (-8) in the individual competition in Las Vegas, despite a standout second round closing at 63 (-7) at the Las Vegas Country Club. Following their dominant performance in the first team event in Mexico, Rahm’s team, “Legion XIII,” could only manage a 5th place finish at “-16” in Nevada.

In 2019, the initial groundwork for a new golf tour emerged with the announcement of a league set to rival the PGA Tour, dubbed the Premier Golf League. In response, PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan hinted that golfers opting to participate in this new league would be excluded from PGA Tour events. Subsequently, in 2020, the PGA European Tour and the PGA Tour forged a “strategic alliance” aimed at collaborating on commercial ventures, scheduling, and prize allocations for their respective memberships.

The Premier Golf League engaged in discussions with Saudi investors regarding a financial collaboration. However, Golf Saudi, a division of the Public Investment Fund, opted to finance a new venture in 2020 with its own vision of establishing a global professional league, commonly known as the “Super Golf League”. This new entity, formally introduced in October 2021 as LIV Golf Investments, appointed former professional golfer Greg Norman as its CEO.

LIV Golf has frequently been likened to the now-defunct breakaway European Super League in football, drawing parallels between the two in terms of their disruptive potential within their respective sports.
