Stefanos Tsitsipas again apologizes to Andrey Rublev for shade at ATP Finals

Stefanos Tsitsipas admits shading Andrey Rublev was “a silly mistake” caused by his mind being on “a completely another planet.”

After losing to Rublev at the 2022 ATP Finals, Tsitsipas said the Russian beat him “with a few tools that he has.”

Tsitsipas’ comments on Rublev quickly went viral as some thought the Greek was out of pocket for making such claims.

Half a year later, Tsitsipas admits he overreacted after losing the match and that wasn’t something he was really proud of.

Tsitsipas sorry for the Rublev shade

“Look, I think he is someone that deserves the win. I think he’s someone that has sort of flown under the radar for what he can do. He has big weapons as a player. And I’ve made a mistake in the past and I said silly things after a loss that I had recently against him. My mind was completely in another planet. So I definitely believe he’s a very strong opponent and he can play against anyone. And the good thing with Rublev is he can play on all surfaces, he’s strong everywhere. He has improved a lot in his consistency. And That is good to see because, you know, He keeps getting better and he keeps pushing us as well to get better too,” Tsitsipas said on the ATP Tennis Radio Podcast.

In his final group stage match at the ATP Finals, Tsitsipas suffered a three-set defeat to Rublev as the Russian beat the Greek with a 3-6 6-3 6-2 score.

“It’s a shame. I feel like the better player. I felt like I could do more with the ball today. I felt like I could just be much more creative. I don’t even have to say that. I think it’s quite obvious. But, yeah, he prevailed with the few tools that he has. He was able to really take advantage of them and win today,” Tsitsipas said after losing to Rublev in Turin.

Tsitsipas has apologized to Rublev several times since and the two appear to be on good terms.
