EVO Japan 2024 has now concluded with huge tournaments for most of the major fighters. Unique in the roster though was Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising. The latest release from Arc, GBFVR at EVO Japan 2024 was one of the highlights. This is one of our first real tests for this game in the AWT 2024.
GBFVR is getting opened up for a full year of fighting game esports. Who are the early standouts though? Looking at the results for EVO Japan 2024, there are quite a few players who have stood out so far.

Rookies Wins GBFVR at EVO Japan 2024
Looking at the final bracket for Versus Rising, the top players were already standing out by the start. He started things in the Winners semi-final, winning 3-2 against Ren. He beat fellow Ibushigin player in the winners’ final, setting the stage to face Gamera in the Grand Final.
Here’s where things get interesting. A lot of the tournaments at EVO Japan 2024 had fairly conventional final matches. GBFVR at EVO Japan was tougher though. Gamera won the first round. Since he’d come up through the losers’ bracket, this wasn’t quite a clean win. Instead, it forced a reset.
Rookies had managed to dominate the winners’ bracket, but it now all came down to this final game. Thankfully for the player, gamera dropped in this second set. Not quite following up in this reset, Rookies managed to win this second match 3-1.
Rookies may have been the big winner in GBFVR at EVO Japan 2024, but plenty of players stood out. It wouldn’t be too surprising if we saw most of these top three outperform in this year’s Arc World Tour for Granblue Fantasy.

GBFVR at EVO Japan 2024 Preview
The tournament will be taking place in a similar format to other events like GGS at EVO Japan 2024. It’ll start out with a wide pools round where all players compete. Then, the best of these players will move forward to a double-elimination bracket. We’ll then see things gradually whittle down until we find the top Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising players.
The tournament will all be happening over two days of EVO Japan, stretching over April 27-28th. There’s a decent prize pool on offer at the tournament too, with over $12,000 at stake. It’s also a platinum-tier event for the AWT 2024, so players will get a solid result for the yearly circuit if they perform well here.
Top Players to Watch in GBFVR
That’s the GBFVR at EVO Japan 2024 tournament will work, but who are the main players to watch out for at the tournament? Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising is a newer game, but there are already quite a few names who are standouts. These are some of the top players to watch at the tournament.
Gamera
Gamera is one of the strongest players competing at EVO Japan this year. He’s a three-time EVO champion, having won EVO Japan twice and Granblue Fantasy Versus at EVO 2022. He even came in highly at early Versus Rising events too.
Fukunaga
Fukunaga is another player coming into GBFVR at EVO Japan with a great track record. Hr’s already won the Arc World Tour Finals for Versus Rising, essentially making him the best active player in the game so far. If he wins again in EVO Japan, he could cement his position on top of this new fighter.
Tako
Tako is a Japanese player with a strong track record in the GBFV franchise. Just in the last few months, he’s won the Cygames Cup Special in 2024 and placed well in the Arc World Tour 2023 Finals.
Justin Wong

One of the best western players attending the game is Justin Wong, He’s a cross-fighting game player who has been a dominant force in tons of the best fighters over the decades. A multi-time EVO winner, he definitely has the pedigree to dominate in a new game like this.
GOBOU
GOBOU is another player who has been on fire in different fighters lately. Heading into GBFVR at EVO Japan 2024, he’s recently won the Last Chance Qualifier for the game and has had strong results in Strive. He could go all the way on Granblue this time too.
