2023 SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Day two of the 2023 South African National Championships concluded from Gqebrha with a second national record biting the dust.

After Pieter Coetze‘s 100m back national record last night, 20-year-old Rebecca Meder followed suit with a new South African standard in the women’s 200m IM.

Meder posted a final time of 2:11.39 to reap the gold, beating out runners-up Aimee Canny and Dakota Tucker. Canny settled for silver in 2:13.35 while Tucker rounded out the top 3 with a bronze medal-worthy 2:16.06.

As for Meder, her time tonight overtook her own previous lifetime best and national record of 2:12.01 logged at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The outing rendered her the 4th place finisher there in Birmingham.

Meder’s splits for this evening’s performance included 27.64/33.32 (1:00.96)/38.53/31.90 to get under the 2:12 threshold for the first time in her career. Her outing also dipped under the World Aquatics ‘A’ standard of 2:12.98 needed to qualify for this summer’s World Championships.

Meder’s time now checks the South African in as the 13th-fastest performer on the season.
