The 49ers first-round selection had a lot of fans around the NFL.

Many were shocked when the San Francisco 49ers took Florida Gators wide receiver Ricky Pearsall with the No. 31 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. The wideout was considered by several draft pundits to be a mid-round selection.

However, as the post-draft process has unfolded, many have praised the 49ers selection, who seemed to have more fans around the league compared to the media. Among the group? Baltimore Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta.

Speaking about sleepers in the 2024 NFL Draft, DeCosta labeled Pearsall as one of those players, sharing that he hoped for the Florida wideout to be available to the Ravens “at some point.”

Ultimately, he went at the backend of the first round, which DeCosta lauded as a “great pick.”

“It was a great pick. I give those guys a lot of credit,” DeCosta said of the selection. “I thought [Pearsall] was a guy that we might get that was a sleeper for us at some point. He really wasn’t a hot, hot commodity name. But that was another guy when you watched his game, he’s a super impressive player on tape.”

The Ravens ultimately took Clemson cornerback Nate Wiggins with their first-round pick at No. 30. They first selected a receiver in the fourth round, taking North Carolina wideout Tez Walker with the No. 113 pick.

Pearsall was the sixth receiver selected in the 2024 NFL Draft, following Ohio State’s Marvin Harrison (No. 4 to Arizona Cardinals), LSU’s Malik Nabers (No. 6 New York Giants), Washington’s Rome Odunze (No. 9 to Chicago Bears), LSU’s Brian Thomas Jr. (No. 23 to Jacksonville Jaguars), and Texas’s Xavier Worthy (No. 28 to Kansas City Chiefs).

By taking the Florida wideout at No. 31, the 49ers continued the run on receivers, beating teams the Carolina Panthers, Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Chargers, and New England Patriots, who all took players at the position over the next six picks, to Pearsall.

Here’s my full breakdown of the Pearsall selection on draft night, and how he fits with the 49ers in the short and long term.
