A vital part of the Browns passing offense, Njoku training with a purpose

Going into his eighth season in the NFL, Cleveland Browns TE David Njoku has been through a lot since being drafted in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft. Coming off of his best season in the league and first Pro Bowl appearance, Njoku is a key cog in the Browns passing offense and will be vital in QB Deshaun Watson’s attempt to return from a major shoulder injury.

Njoku has remade himself as a reliable pass catcher and good blocker. He has also become the defender of all things Cleveland this offseason, after taking on a silly take by a media member to start last year.

A new rule in the NFL could lead to an even bigger season for Njoku this year. In training to make that happen, the tight end and his trainer discussed the goal of losing weight because “This year is speed kills.”

At different times in his career, Njoku has weighed closer to 275 than 250 but hopes to be around the lower number this year. With defenders unable to pull him down from the side or behind the same way they have in the past, Njoku can now focus on outrunning players.

In 2023, Njoku had the sixth most yards among tight ends. In 2024, he hopes to join the 1,000-yard club (there was only one that made it last year) with an added speed dimension.
