Oscarinin: “Anything that’s not winning is a failure”

After Fnatic’s close defeat to arch-rivals G2 in the LEC Winter playoffs, Lee Jones spoke to their top laner Óscar “Oscarinin” Muñoz to get his thoughts on the series.

What do you think went wrong against G2? Are there any positives you can take from the series?

Oscarinin: I think we underperformed a lot – as a team but also me. I think I had a really bad series in general. But even with us being not the best today, not our best version, I think we were the better team, honestly. I think if we played at our normal level we would have won.

But yeah, it was just not our day and I think the games were really weird. I think we had a lot of information that we were just not playing [to] accordingly. And yeah, we just played pretty bad today.

Lee Jones: G2 is considered considerably better than the rest of the LEC at the moment, but you gave them a really close series today.

Is Fnatic close to that level as well then?

Oscarinin: I think so if we improve some things. I think we’ve had some problems for a while and if we solve them, I think we can be better than G2 for sure. I think today if we played a bit better individually — at least me, and I think Marek [Humanoid] didn’t have his best series too — I think if we played better, we would be a better team for sure right now. But I think if we solve those things, I think we can be the best. Not by far, but the best team for sure.

Lee Jones: G2 had an extra day to rest/prep while Fnatic played this series having also been in action yesterday.

Do you think that could’ve had an effect on the outcome?

Oscarinin: I think that affects sleep and the routine a bit in general, but it is what it is. We just have to prepare better for it and that’s it. But yeah, I think it’s better for the team that has one day to relax.

What would a successful season on the whole look like for Fnatic and also for you personally?

Winning. Everything that’s not winning, I think it’s a failure.

What’s been the biggest change since Jun joined?

Oscarinin: I think the bot lane is working really well together. They understand each other really well and they have a really aggressive style. I think today they played really well. They solved some issues that they had and now I think they are playing really well. So yeah, I think they just work really well together and they are very aggressive bot lane. They have really good laning.

Lee Jones: Trymbi’s arrival was thought to have brought a big help with shot-calling, so how have those responsibilities changed after the roster swap?

How has the transition been from Trymbi to Jun?

I think Trymbi talked for sure, like he was kind of the second shot-caller. But I think Ivan [Razork] is the one doing that job, he was doing it before too when Trymbi was here. He talks a lot, he gives a lot of direction in the game and yeah, he’s just the leader in the game. I think he’s just doing it really well and we don’t really need Trymbi I guess.
