The Eagles have a new pass rusher!

With the 94th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles select … Jalyx Hunt, edge rusher, Houston Christian!

This pick was made after the Eagles traded down not once but twice in the third round.

Hunt, who turned 23 last month, originally played at safety for Cornell before transferring and changing positions. So, not exactly a polished prospect.

The Eagles seem to think Hunt is a moldable player with potential. A note from the NFL Network broadcast:

I don’t know about this one. Seems like one of those projection prospects that seems better in theory than in reality. Getting Bryan Smith from McNeese State vibes. In fairness, Hunt is a much better athlete.

The Eagles weakened their edge rush rotation this offseason by trading Haaason Reddick to the New York Jets. Signing Bryce Huff was designed to help mitigate that loss to some extent. The team is returning Josh Sweat (who agreed to a pay cut to stay in Philly), Brandon Graham, and 2023 first-round pick Nolan Smith on the edge. They also have lottery ticket long-shots Julian Okwara and Terrell Lewis on the roster. Realistically, Hunt is probably a depth piece/special teams contributor for the time being.

Scouting report via NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein (who actually had the Eagles taking Hunt at No. 50 in his Day 2 mock draft):

Hunt is a small-school edge defender possessing notable athletic traits and the potential to get bigger and stronger. He currently lacks the lower-body anchor and general play strength to go up against NFL opponents, but the team drafting him is likely to view him as a developmental prospect in need of time to build his frame and his game. Hunt’s speed is obvious as a pass rusher and in run pursuit, but proving he can survive against a downhill running attack could be the difference between challenging for a rotational role or hoping to become a designated pass rusher.
