Long Beach, Hawai’i win; Orlando tops Rise in Pro Volleyball

Second-ranked Long Beach State, which beat visiting No. 9 Penn State, and No. 3 Hawai’i, which swept visiting Sacred Heart, were among the winners Friday in NCAA men’s Division I-II volleyball.

in the Pro Volleyball Federation, the Orlando Valkyries beat the visiting Grand Rapids Rise in four.

Recaps and top performances follow, but first a look at Saturday’s schedule.

USC gets another MPSF shot at No. 4 UCLA, which swept the No. 11 Trojans on Thursday. Also in the MPSF, No. 11 Pepperdine is at Concordia Irvine.

The only Big West team in action is UC Santa Barbara, which is home for the EIVA’s Charleston.

There are two MIVA matches with No. 7 Ohio State home for No. 13 Loyola Chicago and Purdue Fort Wayne at No. No. 14 Lewis. The MIVA’s Quincy is home for independent No. 19 Lincoln Memorial.

There is one EIVA match with No. 17 George Mason home for Saint Francis (PA), while the EIVA’s Harvard is at the NEC’s D’Youville.

The two Conference Carolinas matches show Lees-McRae at Barton and King at Mount Olive.

Also in the NEC, LIU plays FDU and Merrimack is home for. the ECC’s St. Thomas Aquinas.

There are two ECC matches with Thomas More at Roberts Wesleyan and Dominican at American International.

The SIAC has Kentucky State at Fort Valley State and Central State at Morehouse.

The only Pro Volleyball Federation match has the Atlanta Vibe at the San Diego Mojo.

NCAA men

Long Beach State (14-1) of the Big West was too much for visiting Penn State (12-4) of the EIVA  25-17, 25-14, 24-26, 25-14 as Sotiris Siapanis led with 17 kills, Skyler Varga had 14 and Clarke Godbold 12. Varga had two errors in 27 attacks and hit .444 to go with two assists five aces, 10 digs and four blocks, one solo. Simon Torwie had three kills in seven errorless tries and nine blocks, two solo to go with an assist and two aces. Penn State’s John Kerr had 18 kills …

Hawai’i (13-1) of the Big West swept Sacred Heart of the NEC (6-10). Todd Alaka’i had 10 kills … Also in the Big West, No, 5 UC Irvine (11-4, 1-0) hit 468 and swept at No. 18 UC San Diego (7-9, 1-1) and No. 16 CSUN (9-7) swept visiting Charleston (8-9) of the EIVA. UCI’s Hilir Henno had 18 kills, hit .552 and had an assist, an ace, a block and three digs …

Top-ranked Grand Canyon (14-0) swept visiting Stanford (8-7) in their MPSF match. Camden Gianni led with 13 kills, two assists, two aces, eight digs and two blocks. Stanford’s Will Rottman had 18 kills, hit .395 and had had an assist, two aces and four digs … 

In the MIVA, No. 12 Ball State swept Queens, McKendree did the same to Quincy and Lindenwood came away with a four-set win over independent Lincoln Memorial 

In the EIVA, No. 15 Princeton swept No. 17 George Mason, NJIT did the same to the NEC’s FDU and Harvard won in four at No. 20 Daemen of the NEC … 

In the four Conference Carolinas matches, Belmont Abbey won in five at Erskine as BA’s Matthew Staskunas had 21 kills and Pablo Zamar had 22 and Edgerrin James 20 for Erskine. Also in Conference Carolinas, Barton swept King, North Greenville beat Emmanuel in four and Mount Olive swept Lees-McRae, which drooped to 1-15 … 

The NEC’s Merrimack beat the ECC’s Dominican in four, and in the SIAC, Fort Valley State dropped Central State to 1-17 and Edward Waters kept Benedict winless.

Pro Volleyball Federation

The Orlando Valkyries beat the visiting Grand Rapids Rise 25-20, 21-25, 32-30, 27-25. Adora Anae led Orlando with 21 kills, 14 digs and an ace. Jill Gillen had 13 kills, a block and an ace. Grand Rapids’ Emily Dimitrova had 26 kills, two blocks, eight digs and two aces. Claire Chausse added 21 kills, an ace, 11 digs and two blocks, one solo.

Orlando is 4-4, while Grand Rapids is 3-3.
