Sinner accomplished an incredible feat in Melbourne, toppling a ten-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic in the semi-final and erasing two sets to love deficit in the title clash versus Daniil Medvedev. Thus, the 22-year-old secured Italy’s first singles Major title in 48 years! 2024 has just begun, and Sinner’s first Major title is already among the candidates for the Italian sports achievement of the year, placing tennis above any other sport. Sinner entered the Australian Open as the 4th seed and one of the title favorites.

The Italian proved his status with five straight-sets triumphs, setting the title clash against a ten-time champion Novak Djokovic. Novak had a perfect 10-0 record in the Australian Open semi-finals ahead of this clash, but Jannik was eager to end that streak! The Italian earned a massive 6-1, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 victory over world no. 1, reaching his first Major final. Sinner outplayed Djokovic completely in the opening two sets, making a perfect start and wrapping them up in 73 minutes! Eager to fight, Novak found the rhythm behind the initial shot in the third set after saving an early break point.

He denied a match point in the tie break and clinched it 8-6 for more drama. Jannik left the setback behind and maintained a high level in the fourth set, serving well breaking Novak once to bring the victory home and enter the title clash. Daniil Medvedev stood between Sinner and his first Major title, with the Russian chasing his second Major trophy. Daniil made a perfect start before Jannik embraced a notable comeback and scored a 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 win in three hours and 45 minutes, becoming a Major winner at 22. They traded four breaks, and Sinner produced his return games in the pivotal moments. Medvedev had the upper hand in the opening two sets, breaking Sinner four times and reaching deuce at 4-4 in the third set.
Jannik survived and grabbed a late break at 5-4 to extend the battle. Sinner faced the ultimate challenge at 3-3 in the fourth set, with Medvedev spraying a massive backhand error and missing three break chances! The Russian earned one, and the Italian denied it with an ace down the T line. Daniil squandered a game point at 4-5 and lost serve after a forced error, allowing Jannik to introduce a decider after three hours and six minutes.

They served well in the opening five games of the final set before Sinner made a push at 3-2. The Italian clinched a break in the sixth game with a forehand crosscourt winner, opening a 4-2 gap and moving closer to the finish line. The young gun moved 5-2 in front with a service winner in game seven, maintaining the pressure on the other side. Medvedev served to stay in the match in the eighth game and closed it with a volley winner, reducing the deficit to 5-3. Sinner served for the title in game nine and earned a match point with a forced error. The Italian converted it with a forehand down the line winner, celebrating his first Major crown and entering history books.
