The pick is in: Jaguars select LSU WR Brian Thomas Jr. at 23rd overall (Big Cat Country)

Cornerback was commonly agreed upon as Jacksonville’s biggest need entering the evening. The team had its pick of Quinyon Mitchell or Terrion Arnold at 17th overall, and Arnold was still available at 24th overall, but Trevor Lawrence’s receiver room was addressed instead.

2024 NFL Draft: 3 Observations on Jaguars Selecting Brian Thomas Jr. (Jaguar Report)

Frankly, the Jaguars could have taken almost anyone at No. 23 overall and it still would have been somewhat of a win considering their process. Fans typically don’t get excited about trade downs, but the Jaguars now have likely four top-100 picks in the 2025 NFL Draft thanks to their trade down. And they can use any of their extra three picks to either move up the board over the next two days or make a move to trade for a veteran. Add in the fact that Thomas would have likely been the pick at No. 17, and it is hard to make an argument against the Jaguars’ process.

What an anonymous coach had to say about Thomas in Bruce Feldman’s mock draft:

“Potentially, I think can be really good in the NFL. He was a red zone nightmare. Even if you were in great position, he could still win those 50-50 balls. But he didn’t scare you with (yards after catch) like (Malik) Nabers did.”

For the Jaguars, this is just a clear and easy victory. Evaluation overconfidence has long plagued teams in the NFL draft, causing them to overpay in trades. By being a willing trade-down partner — as they were last year — Jacksonville is again able to reap the rewards.

Michael Penix Jr. taken by Falcons in NFL draft surprise (ESPN)

[Kirk] Cousins’ agent, Mike McCartney, told ESPN’s Pete Thamel that the Falcons only notified the QB that they’d pick Penix while the team was on the clock. McCartney said there is frustration and confusion coming from Cousins’ camp because Atlanta did not use its first-round pick to make the team better in 2024.
