GRAND PRIX OF PORTUGAL: THE STARS DON’T SHINE IN THE MUD OF PORTUGAL

on

2017 250 World Champion Pauls Jonass finally made his mark in the 450 World Championship.
Former 250 World Champion Pauls Jonass (2017) won the 450 Portuguese Grand Prix with a 2-2. Literally, every other GP contender suffered crashes in the muddy conditions. Romain Febvre was second, but in the first moto he crashed with Tim Gajser, but ended the day in second overall with a 3-4 score. Tim Gajser won the first moto, but finished 10th in moto two. His 1-10 was good enough for third overall and the MXGP points leader Jorge Prado had a terrible day with a 15-12 day (well out of the top ten in points). Jeffrey Herlings DNF’ed the first 450 moto, but came back to win the second moto. His 23-1 got him a 9th place overall.

Jorge Prado admitted during his four-race Supercross internship that he wasn’t much of a mud rider. In Portugal, he proved it, ending his four-race win streak.

All in all, the 450 class results were quite a free-for all with riders like Cornelius Toendel, Andrea Bonacorsi and Alvin Ostlund placing in the top ten, while Jeremy Seewer, Jorge Prado, Ben Watson, Calvin Vlaanderen, Isak Gifting and Valentin Guillod were all down in the race order.
In the 250 GP of Portugal, Liam Everts swept both muddy motos, while sand specialist Rick Elzinga found the mud to be much like sand on his way to second oveall.. 250 points leader Kay de Wolf still has a 30-point lead in the 250 World Championship-even though he finished with a 3-9 score.
Tim Gajser (243) is at the front with Jorge Prado (1)  to his right and Romain Febvre (3) to his left. Eventual Portuguese 450 Grand Prix winner Pauls Jonas (41) is fifth.
