It’s time to say goodbye to MJF

on

AEW Worlds End 2023

Dynamite airs tonight (Jan. 3) with a live show from Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. This is the first episode of Dynamite during the nine week build towards Revolution, which takes place on March 3.

It’s time to say goodbye to MJF

MJF lost the AEW world championship to Samoa Joe at Worlds End. Minutes later, Adam Cole revealed himself to be The Devil, working alongside Wardlow, The Kingdom, and Roderick Strong as his masked goons.

MJF’s body was already banged up and broken going into Worlds End; he’s expected to be gone from AEW for a while to heal up, perhaps even needing surgery. The fact that MJF was actually removed from the company’s roster page indicates that AEW will move forward in kayfabe with the idea that he is done with the promotion, maybe leaning into his “bidding war of 2024” angle that was centered on MJF’s contract coming to an end at the close of 2023.

If that’s the case, then Adam Cole and his cronies will probably take credit for sending MJF packing from AEW. Cole’s explanation for his entire plot as The Devil will be the most anticipated thing on tonight’s show, and it doesn’t seem like MJF will be there to interrupt him.

One big problem is that Cole doesn’t look like a guy who will return to the ring any time soon due to his injured foot. With MJF and Cole both unable to wrestle for a while, it’s left to be seen if Wardlow, The Kingdom, and Roderick Strong can keep the momentum for this heel faction going at an upper card level when it comes to the actual matches.

Hangman Page, Jay White, Daddy Ass, and The Acclaimed are some of the AEW wrestlers who have been taken out by The Devil in recent months. If MJF isn’t around to confront Cole tonight, will any of these other men show up looking for revenge?

The rest of tonight’s lineup

Christian Cage is now a two-time TNT champion following the events of Worlds End, and he will definitely shove that fact in everyone’s face as he delivers his 2024 State of The Union tonight on Dynamite. Will a new challenger emerge by the end of this segment, or is Adam Copeland hell-bent on getting his hands on Cage one more time?

AEW International Champion Orange Cassidy was on the losing side of a trios match against Action Andretti & Top Flight last week on Rampage, so now Dante Martin gets a shot at Cassidy’s belt tonight.

Mariah May finally makes her AEW in-ring debut tonight in a match against Queen Aminata. Will AEW Women’s World Champion “Timeless” Toni Storm interrupt Mariah’s big moment to make it all about her?

Swerve Strickland follows up on his victory over Dustin Rhodes at Worlds End by stepping in the ring tonight against Daniel Garcia. Is Swerve on a path towards challenging for the world title at Revolution?

Other stuff to keep an eye on

– Samoa Joe is the new AEW World Champion. How will Joe address AEW fans after conquering MJF at Worlds End and claiming the top prize in the promotion?

– The next pay-per-view on AEW’s calendar is Revolution in March, which is roughly two months from now. Sting is set to have the final match of his pro wrestling career on that night. Is it time to find out who will be standing across the ring from Sting in his retirement match?

– Eddie Kingston won the Continental Classic to bring home the Triple Crown. Who will be the first man that tries to take it away from him?

AEW World Tag Team Champions Ricky Starks and Big Bill have a future date for a title defense against Le Sex Gods. Will Chris Jericho be heavily booed by AEW fans if he shows up live tonight to set an official date for the title match?

– FTR vs House of Black is scheduled for this weekend’s Collision, so there may be a promo tonight hyping up the fight.

– How exactly does Saraya plan to incorporate Harley Cameron in her plan to break up Ruby Soho and Angelo Parker?

– Jay Lethal was pinned again at Worlds End. It looks like this could be part of an angle to break him apart from Jeff Jarrett’s crew.

– Stokely Hathaway’s plan to convince Kris Statlander to turn her back on Willow Nightingale is in motion. How frustrated is Kris after losing to Willow at Worlds End?

– Is there any chance that AEW kicks off the new year with a bang by signing Mercedes Mone and having her debut take place tonight? If Tony Khan teases a HUGE ANNOUNCEMENT at some point today, this might actually be happening.

– Jon Moxley and Bryan Danielson are both scheduled to compete in Japan on Thursday at Wrestle Kingdom 18, so they won’t be live on Dynamite tonight.

– It sounds like Jack Perry is no longer suspended by AEW, so where the f*** is he?
