Atlanta adds wide receiver depth late with a solid option from Illinois.

With their second of three sixth round selections on Saturday, the Atlanta Falcons came away with wide receiver depth, drafting Illinois pass catcher Casey Washington with the 187th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

In Washington, the Falcons are getting a player who has excellent hands, quality size, and the ability to make contested catches and pick up additional yardage with the ball in his hands, owing to toughness and strength that his frame only hints at. While not a standout athlete or possessing any one elite trait, Washington is a well-rounded player who has dabbled at playing a returner role in college, and should be able to take on a backup role outside and prove to be a reliable reserve and chain mover for Kirk Cousins and eventually Michael Penix. Whether he can be a bit more than that is an open question, but in the sixth round, there are always going to be those kinds of questions.

The Falcons added a lot of speed this offseason between Darnell Mooney and Rondale Moore, and Washington has a bit more size and some potential to be the long-term WR4 in Atlanta if all goes well For the moment, he’ll primarily factor in on special teams, but he’s worth keeping an eye on as a potentially useful possession receiver for Atlanta’s passing game, especially with very few long-term option at the position under contract.

How do you feel about the selection?
