The upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled to take place between June 1st and 30th in the West Indies and the United States of America (USA), will be a momentous event featuring 20 teams competing for victory. Leading up to this highly anticipated tournament, former England skipper Michael Vaughan has made a noteworthy forecast regarding the likely semi-finalists in this fast-paced and thrilling global cricket spectacle.

Michael Vaughan’s bold prediction

Vaughan predicted that the defending champions, England, would reach the last-four stage of the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Alongside England, Vaughan felt that Australia, South Africa, and West Indies would also make the cut for the semi-finals.

Consequently, the former England captain felt that India, the winner of the inaugural T20 World Cup, would not make it past the group stages.

“My 4 Semi finalists for the T20 WC … England, Australia, South Africa and the West Indies,” Vaughan posted on X.

Performance of four teams selected by Vaughan in T20 World Cup

Defending champions England have asserted their dominance in the shortest-form tournament twice, clinching victory in 2009 and 2022, under the astute leadership of Kevin Peterson and Jos Buttler, respectively. Their journey has also seen them as runners-up in 2016, falling agonizingly short against West Indies in the final showdown. Under the captaincy of Aaron Finch, Australia etched their name in the annals of cricket history by securing their maiden title in 2021, overcoming New Zealand in a gripping finale. However, South Africa’s quest for ICC glory remains unfulfilled, with their only knockout qualification in the T20 World Cup coming in 2014.

As for the host team, West Indies has shone brightly, seizing victory on two occasions. They triumphed over Sri Lanka in 2012 and bested England in 2016, both under the inspiring leadership of Darren Sammy.
