The Cowboys took Tyler Guyton before two other teams could trade up and draft him, according to the rookie.

The Dallas Cowboys threaded a needle during the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. When their original turn came the Cowboys assessed the board and felt like taking the Detroit Lions offer to move back five spots was worth it given the players still available to them. Five spots is five spots, but when you like a handful of guys at that spot the odds are in your favor.

As we know, the Cowboys agreed to trade with the Lions and moved down five spots while netting pick number 73 in the process (they also sent Detroit their 2025 seventh-round pick). Another half hour later, Tyler Guyton finally heard his name called by America’s Team.

Dallas trading down once again when they were on the clock at 29 seemed like a viable option, and one that could have led to even more draft picks. Picking up more capital just felt so good. But the Cowboys decided to draft Tyler Guyton. It is a good thing that they did because, according to Guyton, if they hadn’t the Washington Commanders or New England Patriots may have gotten to him first.

Ultimately neither the Commanders nor Patriots picked again in the first round, so presuming this is true, they either continued to strike out or did not feel like anybody else was worth it.

The Commanders being involved here is obviously interesting given that they are a division rival, but also because their head coach is Dan Quinn and he has poached a fair share of people (staffers and players) who were a part of the Cowboys with him. This time around it seems the actual Cowboys managed to keep him at bay, much like they did with Al Harris.
