Caroline Garcia: Disappointed to lose Lyon final but it wasn’t bad week

Caroline Garcia admitted she was disappointed over not winning Lyon but noted that it was still a positive week game-wise.

After suffering a surprise Australian Open round-of-16 defeat to Magda Linette, Garcia came to Lyon hoping to win a few matches and forget the Australian Open disappointment. 

Garcia, who was the top-seeded player, reached the Lyon final before suffering a 7-6 (7) 7-5 loss to Alycia Parks. 

Before taking on Parks, Garcia dismantled Camila Osorio 6-2 6-2 in the Lyon semifinal. 

“I’m disappointed to have lost in the final but it was a great week where my game gradually fell into place. Against Camila Osorio, it was a great match, certainly the strongest I’ve ever had this season,” Garcia told L’Equipe, as revealed on We Are Tennis France. 

“Je suis déçue d’avoir perdu en finale mais c’était une belle semaine où mon jeu s’est mis en place au fur et à mesure. Face à Camila Osorio, ça a été un beau match, certainement le plus solide que j’ai fait cette saison.”

Garcia had her chances against Parks

The outcome of the Lyon final could have easily been different

The only break point of the first set was seen in the third game, when Garcia saved Parks’ break point. 

In the tie-break, Parks had a 6-5 lead before Garcia won the next two points to save Parks’ set point and also clinch her first set point. 

But from the moment Garcia earned her first set point, she lost the next three points and lost the first-set tie-break.

After losing the first set, Garcia missed out on a break point in the fifth game and also didn’t realize any of her three break points in the 11th game. 

Garcia paid the price for not realizing her second-set break points as she got broken in the 12th game – the game when she was serving to stay in the final.

“I made sure I focused on my service games today to get through the match, because I knew it wasn’t going to be an easy match. So just staying within myself, and fighting for every point, and that got me through the match,” Parks said after beating Garcia.
