Brian Benzing Finishes 2nd At NCAAs in 100 Breast, Highest Mid-Major Finish Since Dean Farris

Towson’s Brian Benzing finished 2nd in the men’s 100 breaststroke at the 2024 NCAA Championships as he swam a 50.59 in the A final.

Benzing now is the highest men’s mid-major finisher at NCAAs since Harvard’s Dean Farris won the 100 free and 100 back at 2019 NCAAs. Matt Fallon of Penn finished 3rd in the 200 breast at 2022 NCAAs.

Benzing improves upon his own fastest mid-major in the event ever as he previously held the fastest time with a 51.25 that he swam at the 2023 CAA Championships. This morning, Benzing improved upon his leading mid-major time swimming a 50.92 and was even faster tonight. He also is the only mid-major swimmer to ever swim under the 51-second mark.

Benzing only finished behind Cal’s Liam Bell tonight as Bell swam a 49.53 setting new NCAA and American records in the process. Benzing has already announced that he will use his COVID-19 5th year of eligibility as he will transfer to Indiana. He will be able to train alongside Josh Matheny who finished 6th in the event tonight.

Tonight was the first time Benzing made an NCAA ‘A’ final as he made the B final the last two years in the 100 breast.
