After a whirlwind Round 1 of the NFL Draft, who could the Colts target on Day 2 of the Draft?

After the Colts selected UCLA Edge Rusher Laiatu Latu in Round 1 of the 2024 NFL Draft, the Colts have (as of right now) 2 picks on Day 2. Who could be targets for the team?

Wide Receivers

  1. Adonai Mitchell, Texas
  2. Ladd McConkey, Georgia
  3. Roman Wilson, Michigan
  4. Troy Franklin, Oregon
  5. Malachi Corley, Western Kentucky
  6. Keon Coleman, Florida State
  7. Jalen McMillan, Washington
  8. Ryan Flournoy, Southeastern Missouri State
  9. Devontez Walker, North Carolina
  10. Malik Washington, Virginia

The 2024 Draft class tied the NFL record for most Wide Receivers taken in Round 1 with 7. However there is still a smorgasbord of Day 2 graded talent still available, which could set the record for most Wide Receivers taken in the first 3 Rounds of the Draft.

AD Mitchell & Ladd McConkey are the top 2 available Wide Receivers left and should likely go early Round 2. Mitchell as the freak athlete with reliable hands & Ladd as one of the best route runners in the Draft should be highly coveted.

Roman Wilson & Ryan Flournoy were two Senior Bowl standouts who are very appealing as well. Roman is an undersized yet blazing fast Wide out with a smoothness to his routes & reliable hands. Flournoy is a bigger body yet highly athletic wide receiver who dominated small school competition and showed an improved route tree at the Senior Bowl. Strong contested catcher with power at the hit point to gain Yards after the Catch.

Troy Franklin is a big play deep threat Wide Receiver. Long and slender, he struggles vs press, contested catches, and blocking but his deep ball abilities are some of the best in the class. Malachi Corley is on the complete opposite end of the spectrum as a Running Back in a Wide Receiver’s body who dominated after the catch on short routes and screens. There is the question of his Route tree on intermediate and deep plays, but his dominant Yards after the Catch profile as a nightmare in the open field should be valued by teams. Malik Washington fills a similar profile but a with a lighter frame than Corley.

Keon Coleman is a big play & big frame WR who has had his hype cooled in this predraft process. He struggled in contested catches in 2023 and has a limited route tree. Devontez Walker is another deep threat Wide Receiver, but who had a very poor Senior Bowl performance (in the game in particular couldn’t catch a single one of his 6 targets). Still he showed better hands on tape but still needs work on his routes.

Cornerbacks

  1. Cooper DeJean, Iowa
  2. Kool-Aid McKinstry, Alabama
  3. Mike Sainristil, Michigan
  4. Max Melton, Rutgers
  5. TJ Tampa, Iowa State
  6. Kamari Lassiter, Georgia
  7. Ennis Rakestraw III, Missouri
  8. Cam Hart, Notre Dame
  9. Khyree Jackson, Oregon
  10. Elijah Jones, Boston College

There are 2 remaining Corners with Round 1 grades: Cooper DeJean & Kool-Aid McKinstry. DeJean is a highly athletic & versatile DB who could move from Safety, Slot, or boundary Corner while also providing return abilities. Great run defender and strong ball skills while being elite in Zone coverage. His biggest concerns were a tibula fracture in November (but has since returned back to health as seen by his sensational Pro Day Performance) & some stiffness in his hips. However working in a Zone heavy scheme could help keep at outside Corner and assuage some of the concerns. Kool-Aid was one of the best cover Corners in 2022 in college football. An elite short area athlete with good ball skills and cover ability in man and zone, McKinstry was very high on most boards heading into 2023. However a down year with questions about his ability to keep up on deeper routes hurt his stock.

Melton, Hart, & Jackson are the most Chris Ballard prototype meets Gus Bradley scheme fits afterwards. While Melton is the smallest, his exceptional length for his size, slot/boundary versatility, high athleticism, and strength in Zone coverage more than makes up for it. Hart is the longest and showed good fluidity for his size in drills. Jackson was sensational in coverage in 2023.
