NFL Draft Preview: For the first time in a while, the Denver Broncos will have a first round pick and could be one of the movers and shakers in the first round. While most Broncos fans prefer they trade back on Day 1, there have been some rumors of a trade up. Remarkably, in both cases, they involved the Philadelphia Eagles.

For all three days of the NFL Draft, I will be updating each and every pick in this post as they come in. As is our tradition here, I’ll bring in our resident draft guru to add his instant analysis for each pick in the first round. It will be Chris Hart this time around. While we both expect Denver to pick somewhere other than their 12th overall selection, there is always a chance they do the typical thing and sit right where they are at and make their pick.

Day is expected to be somewhat boring for us with Denver picking once in the early parts of the third round, but I’ll be here updating every pick as they come through and maybe we see some more action from Denver given they have quite a bit of Day 3 capital to make some moves back into Day 2.

Day One Recap: The first round of the 2024 NFL Draft was rather uneventful. Despite all the hype surrounding potential blockbuster trades and chaos, none of that happened. There were a few minor moves up or down, but by and large teams stuck close to their original pick.

The shocking part of Day 1 centered around the quarterback position. Six quarterbacks were taken in the first 12 picks of the draft, which is obviously a record. The other record was that no defensive players were taken until the 15th overall pick — the longest run of offensive players to start an NFL Draft in history.

The Denver Broncos were able to get the quarterback Sean Payton had been targeting all along. While Bo Nix was the sixth quarterback taken in the first round, he was third on Denver’s draft board behind Caleb Williams and Jaylen Daniels so that should tell you how they felt about him at 12.

Day Two Recap: If the first round was quiet, the second and third rounds had some fireworks. With such a huge run on offensive players on Day 1, it was predictable that the defensive side of the ball enjoyed prominence all throughout Day 2 with interior defensive linemen and cornerbacks leading the way. There was one team that seemed to ‘win the draft’ on Day 2 with the Washington Commanders taking every single player everyone loved, which was interesting.

As for the Broncos, they didn’t do anything but wait patiently for an edge rusher who they weren’t sure would fall to them. They had decided to trade back if he didn’t, but he did. With their 76th overall selection in the third round, the Broncos went with Utah edge rusher Jonah Elliss.

Elliss was a player that flew under the radar even for those of us at Mile High Report who paid attention to the draft and the top prospects. In hindsight, we can’t believe he did considering how much burst he shows and some of his outstanding pass rush moves. Overall, that pick appears to be an exciting one for Denver.
