For the first time ever, an NXT wrestler was taken in the first round.
Here’s how round one of the 2024 WWE Draft played out:
- SmackDown: Bianca Belair
- Raw: Jey Uso
- SmackDown: Carmelo Hayes
- Raw: Seth Rollins
The show opened with Paul Heyman claiming Roman Reigns took himself out of eligibility for this year’s draft, seeing as he won’t be back for some time. That served to create some intrigue around the top pick, considering that’s been Reigns for the past couple years, though The Bloodline was always listed as a group.
As in year’s past, Triple H was out first to reveal the opening picks for each brand, with a little help from WWE Champion Cody Rhodes.
This year was different, however, in the sense that champions were protected, so we got instant surprises and a first round that seems like it shouldn’t have been the first round. That included the first ever NXT star being selected in the first, with Carmelo Hayes officially getting called up.
Meanwhile, every other pick saw each wrestler sticking on the brand they’ve been working on.
