“There will be an even greater connection to the local community. Emma’s [Raducanu] Chinese roots and her remarkable rise to stardom by winning the US Open have made her a global sensation, while Wu Yibing’s historic feat as the first Chinese national to win an ATP tournament has significantly elevated his standing in world tennis,” Luiz Carvalho, a senior vice-president at sports group IMG, said in a statement in July. Over the last couple of weeks, 20-year-old Raducanu has been working hard in the gym and practice court to ensure she is able to return at the start of the 2024 season. “I will be coming back with a lower ranking but I’m looking forward to starting again, resetting. I still have new goals, new things I want to achieve but I’ve still got 15 years in my career so there is no rush. Throughout my career I’ve had setbacks. I take most of my inspiration from books, I read a lot, I read Chinese history about the different dynasties,” Raducanu told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme last week.
