Wendi Richter responds to Toni Storm’s challenge: ‘I’m not afraid!’

AEW on TV’s X

Be careful what you wish for, “Timeless” Toni Storm, because you might just get it.

After successfully defending the AEW Women’s Championship last December at World’s End, Storm was asked about her interest in a match with a potential free agent signing. Instead of targeting Mercedes Moné, as most expected, Storm called out WWE Hall of Famer Wendi Richter, saying, “Wendi Richter, I’m gonna f*** you up.”

Now comes a response from Richter.

During a virtual signing with online pro wrestling retailer Highspots, Richter said, “Well, you know, money does talk. If they could cough up enough money, I’d take her on! I’d even give her the first swing. Bring it, Toni. You think you can beat me? I’d like to see it. I’m not afraid.”

Richter said she was previously unaware that Storm had been calling her out. While it seems doubtful that the 63-year-old former WWE Women’s Champion would go through with such a match, it’s not totally out of the realm of possibility. Richter’s trainer, The Fabulous Moolah, wrestled into her 80s. According to The Internet Wrestling Database, Richter last wrestled in a six-person tag team match in 2005.

Richter’s wrestling career began in the late 1970s. She exploded in popularity in the mid-1980s when WWE paired her with pop music singer Cyndi Lauper in a feud against Captain Lou Albano and Moolah. However, things fell apart in 1985 when Richter disagreed with the company regarding her pay. This resulted in the first screw job in WWE history, as a masked Moolah competing as The Spider won the Women’s Championship from Richter after Richter kicked out of a pin attempt despite being fast-counted.

Following her questionable defeat, Richter made fewer appearances in wrestling before retiring quietly between the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. She later reconciled with WWE and was inducted into its Hall of Fame in 2010.

Despite her last match coming almost 20 years ago, the tone in Richter’s suggests she may be eager for a fight, so Storm might want to think twice about challenging her. Or else she could find herself coming out on the short end of the stick against a spirited senior citizen if she’s not careful.
