We have a punting competition now, too

Following the 2024 NFL Draft, we know that the Minnesota Vikings are going to have a kicking competition at some point during this offseason and/or preseason, and now it looks like they might have a competition at the punter spot as well.

The team has announced that they have signed punter Seth Vernon, who spent Training Camp in 2022 with the Atlanta Falcons. He was not in the league anywhere in 2023.

Vernon played his college ball at Portland State and averaged 44.6 yards/punt during his career there. He had 29 punts that traveled over 50 yards and 27 that were downed inside the 20-yard line.

He then signed with the Falcons as an undrafted free agent and appeared in just one preseason game, punting three times for an average of 44.7 yards/punt.

Vernon is a pretty big guy at 6’3” and 250 pounds, making him about the same size as the team’s current punter, Ryan Wright. I’m not sure if that means anything or if the Vikings have a “type” when it comes to their punters now, but I thought it was worth noting.

The team has not yet announced a corresponding roster move to go with the Vernon signing, but I believe they have to at some point because they had a full 90-man roster after their draft picks and UDFA signings were accounted for. If or when they announce such a move, we’ll add it as an update to this post.
