Vanderbilt University falls against Tennessee at the ITA Kickoff Weekend

on

No.25 Vanderbilt University women’s tennis team was defeated by No.17 Tennessee at the ITA Kickoff Weekend. The Commodores will play in a few hours in Knoxville, where they will compete against No. 21 Miami at 5 p.m. CT.

Coach Aleke Tsoubanos explained after the defeat: “Difficult for us today, not being up to par against UT. We made some improvements in the doubles and we played a very good point there.

The singles was a bit of a story of two halves… we came out of the gates firing and had some pretty big leads on four out of six courts, but good teams don’t go away and a couple of those leads were reversed.

We found ourselves in three-set matches that we couldn’t finish Anessa and CB got two big points in singles and we’ll learn from these close games, but right now we need to turn around and be ready to compete again tomorrow night against Miami.”

Bridget Stammel and Valeria Ray led the Commodores on Court 3, securing their first doubles win against Tennessee’s Lauren Anzalotta and Catherine Aulia. The Volunteers got their next win on Court 2, leaving the deciding game to Anessa Lee and Célia-Belle Mohr. Mohr and Lee captured the doubles point for the Dores, winning 6-4 and giving them the lead in singles.

Lee continued her winning streak, earning the first singles win for Vandy and winning in straight sets. Holly Staff fell on court 3, but Mohr got another set win, giving Vanderbilt a 3-1 lead. Stammel started strong and won the first set, but then she lost the second and third. Ray recovered from the first set loss to take the second and force a third set, along with Sonya Macavei. Stammel and Macavei both lost in the third set, sealing Tennessee’s victory by an overall score of 4–3.
