But is it going to matter?

Last night was a pretty exciting first round of the 2024 NFL Draft for the Minnesota Vikings, and I think that’s something that we can all admit. However, in all that excitement, it turns out that the Vikings are currently a bit short of capital for next year’s NFL Draft.

After making the trade that allowed them to select Alabama edge defender Dallas Turner, the Vikings are now down to just three draft picks for next year’s selection meeting: their first-round pick and a pair of fifth-rounders.

Where did all those picks go? Well, let’s take a look at the 2025 draft picks for the purple.

  • Round 1 pick
  • Round 2 pick (sent to Houston Texans in deal to acquire #23 in this year’s draft)
  • Round 3 pick (sent to Jacksonville Jaguars in Dallas Turner trade)
  • Round 4 pick (sent to Jacksonville Jaguars in Dallas Turner trade)
  • Round 5 pick
  • Round 5 pick (acquired from Cleveland Browns in Za’Darius Smith trade)
  • Round 6 pick (sent to Cleveland Browns in Za’Darius Smith trade)
  • Round 7 pick (sent to Cleveland Browns in Za’Darius Smith trade)

Now, there are a few caveats to this.

First off, the Vikings are likely to receive a third-round Compensatory pick from their losses in free agency this past season. They could receive more, but according to the folks from Over the Cap they’re in line to receive at least one third-rounder.

The Vikings could also be in line for some sort of compensation in the case of the Atlanta Falcons tampering with Kirk Cousins. That case wasn’t resolved before this year’s Draft, obviously, but there could be something coming between now and next year’s Draft.

There’s also the matter of the Vikings potentially receiving a seventh-round pick from the Pittsburgh Steelers from when they traded offensive lineman Jesse Davis to the Steelers back in August of 2022. The Steelers sent a conditional seventh-rounder to the Vikings but it’s unclear what the conditions that needed to be met were.

So, the Vikings are currently a bit shorthanded when it comes to picks for the 2025 NFL Draft, but there should be some more picks eventually coming and, even if there aren’t, there are ways around that through trades and things of that nature. The Vikings are also going to be sitting on a ton of salary cap space next offseason, so they’ll be able to make additions to the roster through that venue.

But if you’re already looking ahead to next year’s Draft for the Minnesota Vikings, there isn’t a whole lot to look forward to as things stand right now.
