The Packers aren’t giving up on Josh Myers

Despite the rumors of Zach Tom being viewed as an elite center in their eyes, Green Bay appears to be rolling with Myers in 2024.

Last month, ESPN’s Rob Demovsky reported that the Green Bay Packers consider Zach Tom a potential Hall-of-Fame center. When the team turned in their 2024 first-round pick for a tackle, Jordan Morgan, who could potentially displace one of the Packers’ starting tackles in the starting lineup, many wondered what this would mean for incumbent starting center Josh Myers.

A former second-round pick, Myers has been graded out by Pro Football Focus with season-long grades of 54.9, 61.1 and 54.7 in his three years in the NFL — below-average numbers for a starting center. In 2021, he was also selected one pick ahead of Creed Humphrey, an All-Pro center, something that constantly gets brought up in conversations around his performance.

Despite the Tom-to-center rumors and Myers’ seemingly below-standard performance, the Packers don’t seem to have the itch to move him from the center spot. While Myers did have some college playing experience at guard — notable because the right guard position seems the most up for grabs this offseason — Packers offensive line coach Luke Butkus stated on Wednesday that everyone on the offensive line will be cross-trained at multiple positions other than Myers.

It appears that how Green Bay feels internally about Myers, who is in a contract season, doesn’t match how outsiders feel about the situation. Per The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman, Butkus said, “Obviously, Josh Myers is our center,” in the same Wednesday press conference.

We’ll see if the Packers feel the same way once the summer comes around and they’re trying to get their best five on the field, but it seems like Myers has the inside lane to keep his starting job — if the team even allows for him to be challenged. It’s unlikely that Tom will move off of tackle for the open right guard gig, meaning that the two camp battles to watch are Jordan Morgan versus Rasheed Walker at left tackle and whatever is happening at the right guard spot — with likely starting contenders being Sean Rhyan, Royce Newman and 2024 fifth-round pick Jacob Monk.
