Joe Douglas continues to stockpile highly athletic players
Since taking over as general manager in 2019, Joe Douglas has seemingly always valued athleticism in his draft picks. Indeed, even his first ever first round pick, Mekhi Becton, was a prospect whose stock was largely contingent on having superb physical traits.
What about this year’s draft? Did that trend hold?
To put it succinctly, yes.
Specifically, the New York Jets average Relative Athletic Score among their prospects was an 8.89 out of 10, which ranked 5th among all NFL teams according to ProFootballNetwork. Of note, relative athletic score is a calculation created by Kent Lee Platte that accounts for a player’s position, size, and athletic testing with an RAS scorecard looking like the below.
Olumuyiwa Fashanu is a OT prospect in the 2024 draft class. He scored a 9.59 #RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 56 out of 1330 OT from 1987 to 2024.https://t.co/pejf1kkka0 pic.twitter.com/p8kzOn3GuW

With that said, there is a bit of an asterisk around the ranking for the New York Jets. While their average was 8.92, two of their draft picks did not participate in athletic testing: running back Braelon Allen and quarterback Jordan Travis. Given this, it’s possible that the 2024 Jets draft class was more or less athletic than this aggregated number suggests.
