The J.J. McCarthy Effect is real (maybe)

Then again, it might not be

After the Minnesota Vikings selected Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy with the 10th pick in last weekend’s NFL Draft, one of the points that people made about him was the fact that he wins a lot. He was incredibly successful in high school and had a 27-1 record as the starter at Michigan in his two years as the starter. Now, you can talk about whether or not wins are a quarterback stat, but a curious thing has happened to Minnesota sports teams since McCarthy was drafted.

They can’t stop winning, either.

As Fantasy Pros writer and fellow Vikings fan Thor Nystrom pointed out on social media last night, no Minnesota sports team has lost since the Vikings selected McCarthy last Thursday.

Since the selection of McCarthy last Thursday, the Minnesota Twins have won nine consecutive games (as part of a larger 12-game winning streak). The Minnesota Timberwolves, after losing their final regular season game prior to the draft, have now reeled off five consecutive victories in the NBA playoffs, including the first four-game sweep by any team in the history of Minnesota sports when they took out the Phoenix Suns in Round 1. Even the local soccer team, Minnesota United FC, has put together a pair of wins since McCarthy’s selection.

All up, Minnesota sports teams are 16-0 since the Vikings added their quarterback of the future a little more than a week ago.

Now, I’m not saying that correlation equals causation in this case, because it almost certainly doesn’t. But you have to wonder just a little bit. . .don’t you?

(Also, if the Twins lose to Boston today, just forget that I said anything.)
