Thanasi Kokkinakis reveals he is not sure when Nick Kyrgios will be coming back but underlines that his close friends is doing “everything possible” to return as soon as possible.

Kyrgios, who won the 2022 Australian Open men’s doubles title with Kokkinakis in 2022, appeared in just one tournament in 2023 due to knee and wrist injuries. Unfortunately, Kyrgios didn’t manage to recover in time and he will be missing the start of 2024. With Kyrgios sidelined, Kokkinakis plans to team up with fellow Australian Alexei Popyrin at the Australian Open.

“I’ll be with the tall, lanky ostrich in the corner, Alexei. Hopefully he (Nick) gets back healthy. You never know with injuries. I’ve had my fair share and a lot of times when you miss a lot of time a lot of other little niggles come back. I’m not sure when that will be, I know he’s doing everything he can,” Kokkinakis said, via The West Australian.

Kokkinakis on his state, future

Kokkinakis, who will be turning 28 in April, had a very rough start to his career that was marked by constant injuries and surgeries. But Kokkinakis has been managing to avoid serious injuries over the last couple of years and now he feels very young and believes his best tennis days are ahead of him.

“My best tennis is ahead of me but how long I’ll play, I don’t know. A lot of guys are like robots that love playing week in, week out everywhere and that’s the bit I struggle with. But in tennis years I’m feeling 22, 23 and still have my best tennis ahead. It’s just about trying to lock in for whatever’s left in my career,” Kokkinakis said.

Kokkinakis, ranked at No. 65 in the world, is set to start his season at the Brisbane International. Since Kokkinakis didn’t receive a main draw wildcard, he is currently slated to play in the Brisbane qualifying event.
