Rory McIlroy Steps Down from Player Director Role on PGA Tour Policy Board

Rory McIlroy surprised many by stepping down from the PGA Tour board on Tuesday. His departure comes at a critical time as the tour works on finalizing an agreement involving Saudi Arabia’s national wealth fund for a new business venture. The PGA Tour immediately confirmed such information via social media. Many were surprised by the decision of the Northern Irishman, who has been one of the main ambassadors of the PGA Tour since the creation of LIV Golf.
 

“Citing personal and professional commitments, Rory McIlroy has notified the PGA Tour policy board that he is resigning his position as a player director,” -The PGA Tour issued a statement.

Jay Monahan reacts to Rory McIlroy’s decision

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan also spoke out after Rory’s decision. Monahan had nothing but words of praise for Rory, who has stood up for the PGA Tour since day one and has always tried to keep the Tour going in the right direction. Monahan and other PGA Tour officials accepted his decision and wished him luck.

 “During his tenure, Rory’s insight has been instrumental in helping shape the success of the Tour and his willingness to thoughtfully voice his opinion has been especially impactful. Given the extraordinary time and effort that Rory – and all of his fellow player directors – have invested in the Tour during this unprecedented, transformational period in our history, we certainly understand and respect his decision to step down in order to focus on his game and his family.”- Jay Monahan said.

During a press conference, Rory McIlroy stressed that being involved in making crucial decisions for the PGA Tour wasn’t a particularly positive experience for him.

“Not particularly, no,” McIlroy said. “Not what I signed for when I went on the board. But the game of professional golf has been in flux for the last two years.”
